Dear Mayor,
I do live only now after so many years, thirty, a life.
The day after the earthquake, always fond of a medical emergency, I ask a young doctor Messina to my dear friends Nino Lembo, Piedmont Hospital doctor today and Furio Pronesti medico a Melicucco RC di venire con me.

Dear Andrea, Carlo are from Verona. When we met here in Verona, at an event, I have come to mind the moments of our meeting, thirty years ago, along the road through the rubble and destruction.
We had come with campers, cars etc.. trying to bring help, but the severity of the disaster has now shown our helplessness, not only of material things they needed, but the solidarity of all.
remember your smile, your ease in receiving our support. Important moments full of humanity.
You were good. Greetings to all.
over the testimony of Charles Castiglione, Verona has always been committed to volunteer ....

Hello Salandra
In occasion of the disastrous earthquake and by referring to the amateur radio sponsored in memory of the terrible event I would send a photo made to me in a room of the Province of Trento with my radio equipment and for a couple of weeks I kept radio contact with Trent Fire Brigade under the command of the engineer. Saved in San Mango sul Calore. In the picture are with his wife Valerie of one of our radio operator Trentino.
A special thanks to amateur ... their help was great.

The moving testimony of a military ... among the first rescuers
incredible event occurred thirty years ago in Santomenna (SA).
Sunday, November 23, 1980, I was nineteen and I was on leave as a conscript: I was at the counter of a pizzeria in Eboli, when, at 19:35, there is a terrifying earthquake.
managed to gain the door, which looked into the alley, where, during the run, I do not know how I found myself on the ground, got up and managed to reach a little square, in a shower of tiles, bricks and collapsing buildings!
... I went immediately to the barracks of Persia, and I tried to phone home to find mine, but without success!
... The Colonel, in a short time, convene the extraordinary gathering in the square, where we announced that: "... The situation is catastrophic, the affected areas are not well defined ..." then, on every vehicle available in the barracks, raises the military and send them on a mission to a destination unknown to them.
... We, in twenty-five, on a truck, we are the only ones to reach (at about 04:00), Santomenna a small mountain village on the border with Lucania.
The road entered the village at once, and disappeared into the darkness under the rubble. The lieutenant who was with us, ordered to wait for the dawn, because without a torch and other equipment needed, that we could not get us wrong.
that waiting was agony: the complaints that were heard in the distance, power, as, negative thoughts for no-news of my family.
"Finally," the first glimmers of dawn, in a surreal desert and we entered the village, there was a house or a street, everything looked like a dusty heap and kept shaking where you can see some body property emerge from the rubble!
loaned first aid to an elderly lady who heard him complain, helping it to emerge from the debris.
Meanwhile, a little 'later, a group calling us, claiming to feel a whine coming from under the rubble in the center right there, where before there was the alley.
Most of the group, however, felt nothing, and the scenario was very unlikely, as there was an expanse of high and compact debris that left no hope for survival, facing the walls were crumbling all collapsed, except a hanging much right where we started to dig in disbelief.
We did not have a reference precise, were removed a little 'trial and error, constantly begging for confirmation that the voice gradually begins to perceive.
The aftershocks, which were happening every ten minutes, they sent us constantly in panic and danced around the brick wall of tufa, which had by far exceeds the angle of fall, was strangely still standing.
of a sudden came the mayor with obvious despair that has supported and encouraged in the hole: a large part of the initial group was concentrated there in what was becoming an endless "crater two meters deep and four wide or five.
The voice became more noticeable, and it was that of a boy who was driving, at least three hours of digging straight to his ear, which eventually even if a bit 'bloody, we discovered.
The freed gently dusty face, began to see us, but the work was all but finished, it was necessary to bring out more of the large stone material that covered the body.
In the meantime tries to reassure that child about nine years, but with failure, as each shock, we left him alone in the crater: jump out to avoid being buried, thus cause the crying.

Quirino Hi
are Pasquale and I am writing from the island of Procida near Naples.
In November 1980 I was part of a cultural circle. As soon as he heard the news of the serious tragedy, trying to put at your disposal to do something.
We tried to involve as many people as possible gathering in a former church at the center island. Making up about forty boys and divided into two groups organized the departure. So with three cars for the group and after contacting the police, on 26 November, at dawn, he left the first group. So begins this unforgettable adventure. We arrived around 12.00 per
Santomenno.Lo was apocalyptic scenario, where the force was great but the disruption made by padrona.Cercammo to do everything we could: we mounted military tents, open road, and so on. We slept in the car tomorrow afternoon and then again for Procida and the second group was already on his way to give us the change. All this lasted about ten days, then the demands of work and family prevented us from continuing. We followed television for the reconstruction and we promised to return soon, but it did not ....
often speaks to review the beautiful / ugly adventure and each of us, with tears in his eyes, hoping that some time has been planning the pain of those gorni.
I enclose two photos taken on the fly, a small contribution can help you today hoping to make the "difference". In greeting
I hope that after all these years we can speak of a common Santomenna to visit for its natural beauty and not for the past earthquake.
Sincerely ...
